Well you've come to the right place.

Lawn Mower Racing is kicking up a storm in local communities all over the world. Primarily located in the U.K., United States, and Australia, it is a sport based on the spirit of competition and fun.

Do you have what it takes to be a lawn mower racer?

Are you a self starter?

Do you work well with your hands?

Do you have enough spare time?

Do you have the financial resources?

Do you already own a riding lawn mower?

Do you know anything about engines, steering kits, axel's, or other automotive components?

Do you have the DRIVE?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, I definitely suggest you start looking into the sport a little bit more thoroughly.

Take it from me... I stumbled across this sport just by chance, and I'm loving every second of it.

How to Build a Lawn Mower Racer?

If you are highly interested in Lawn Mower Racing, you might want to check out HeyMow for some of the newest project builds.

This site is a great place to meet and greet with other Lawn Mower Racers from your area. When initially planning for your brand new Lawn Mower Racing machine, you'll want to consider the following:

Purchasing a Mower

You'll want to take a look on eBay for some old Mowers. You can get some for extremely cheap, and the amount of work you have to put in will generally decrease with the cost associated with the specific mower that you choose.

Cleaning it up
Before you get started, you'll need to remove all of the existing parts on the lawn mower in order to get it ready for construction. Make sure you keep the chassis, and pretty much only the chassis. You'll also want to sand it down for a cleaner look without the dust and rust that it may have come with.

Strengthen the Chassis
You'll want to use metal to strengthen the chassis up. You can do this by welding pieces of metal to the chassis and possibly the back axel. Make sure you have learned how to weld, or have experience welding before you attempt this, however.

Set up the Back Axle
I personally would contract out this work. It takes a lot of experience to do this correctly. However, the resource listed above over at HeyMow may be able to help you with this.

Additional Parts
You will need to cut out the engine plate. The tools used to do this would be a jigsaw, drill, and a hole saw. You'll need to pick up a steering set, wheels, an engine, and some spare tires. You can probably find a lot of this in classified sections of newspapers or magazines, as well as eBay. There is also a buy/sell section over at HowMow that you can check out. The folks there are generally very helpful, so don't be afraid to ask questions.

Welding
You'll need to attach the steering set to the chassis. Make sure when you are welding that you are always wearing protective gear, as the sparks can blind you. You will need to fit all of the wheels, back axle, and the tires. If you do not have experience in this kind of work, you should get help from a professional in this area. You will need to fit the brake calliper and probably make your own pedals to accommodate the clutch, brake and accelerator. For the Steering wheel and a seat, you can definitely look at your local junk yards, or again check out ebay or HeyMow for people selling their spare/old parts.

Test Drive
After you've completed all of this, you're going to want to test drive your new Lawn Mower Racer. Before you can take it out and begin racing in a lawn mower race, you'll need to make sure everything runs smoothly. Locate any issues with the steering or breaks, and try riding on as many different terrains as you can to ensure it handles properly.

Additional Info
Search the web! This guide is not meant to help people learn how to weld, or about the parts included, but mainly serves as a quick guide to getting your lawn mower ready for racing!

I hope it helped.

What is Lawn Mower Racing?

Lawn Mower Racing Guide aims to help newcomers into the Lawn Mower Racing world understand all of the intricacies involved in the sport.

Lawn Mower Racing is essentially a form of motorsport, similar to motocross or even Nascar. The sport was invented in 1973 in The Cricketers Arms pub in England. It has gained incredible popularity in the United States, and is one of the fastest rising motorsports in the Country in terms of popularity. The official site for the US Lawn Mower Racing Association can be found here.

Lawn Mower Racing should not be confused with Go-karting, even though the lawn mower engines have often been used. Amateur participants on go-kart races often use lawn mower engines to develop their go karts.

There was even a video game being developed by eV Interactive. This video game was intended on being released in 2006, and was sanctioned by the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association.

Lawn Mower Racing has also been seen in various sitcoms on American TV, such as Home Improvement and King of the Hill.

It has become a sport that many families have grown to love, and is the reason I am writing this website. I want to spread the word about Lawn Mower Racing to as many people as possible!
